# Business electricity rates API

> Compare Australian business electricity rates for any postcode, network, city, state or NMI. Every plan is costed at your annual usage incl. GST and compared with the Default Market Offer or Victorian Default Offer. Free to use, no API key.

The Termina business electricity rates API returns the cheapest business electricity rates for any location on Australia's National Electricity Market. Each plan is costed for a year at the usage you give it, incl. GST, and compared with the regulated standing offer for that network at the same usage.

It covers two kinds of rates:

* **Public plans** that any business can sign up to, from retailers' published plan data.
* **Termina buying group rates**, negotiated by Termina for 10,000+ business locations and only available through Termina.

```bash theme={null}
curl "https://api.termina.com/v1/rates?postcode=2000"
```

## Questions it answers

* What is the cheapest business electricity rate for a postcode, network, city or state?
* How much less than the Default Market Offer (DMO) or Victorian Default Offer (VDO) is it?
* Which retailer has the cheapest public business plan on a network?
* What would a business using 25,000 kWh a year pay on each plan?
* Is a Termina buying group rate cheaper than the best public plan?

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Is there an API for Australian business electricity rates?">
    Yes. `GET https://api.termina.com/v1/rates` returns business electricity rates for any postcode, network, city, state or NMI on the National Electricity Market, costed at your usage incl. GST and compared with the DMO or VDO. It's free to use and doesn't need an API key.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Where does the rates data come from?">
    Public plans come from retailers' published plan data under the Consumer Data Right, the same data behind Energy Made Easy. Buying group rates come from Termina's negotiated offers. Benchmarks come from the AER, ESC and Aurora Energy's published 2026-27 tariffs.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I compare business electricity rates against the Default Market Offer?">
    Yes. Every plan has `vs_standing_offer_pct`, the % difference from the network's DMO or VDO at the same usage. The ACT and Ergon (regional Queensland) have no benchmark with published unit prices, so the field is null there.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Are there rate limits?">
    120 requests a minute per IP address. Responses are cached for up to an hour, so repeating a request within the hour is fast.
